I Forget, Therefore...What Was I Saying?

Somebody in North Carolina is going to be in a mess of trouble. A small, soft-sided case was found Wednesday in the opening of a mailbox in Raleigh. The police were notified and sent out to investigate the situation. By this time, the suspicious looking parcel had fallen completely into the mailbox. Several blocks were closed off, people in nearby buildings were warned to stay away from windows, and a bomb squad was eventually brought in to detonate the case. What was inside this most dangerous of objects? Makeup. Someone had stuffed a cosmetics case into the mailbox. This ordeal took several hours, and is still under investigation, all because of makeup. The mailbox has been removed from the street, and police are checking surveillance footage in hopes of spotting the perpetrator. If it was a malicious prank, I hope they catch the idiot. Somehow, though, I can't help but picture a harried woman, desperately searching for her makeup kit, while holding a Netflix envelope that she could have sworn she'd already mailed.

The truth is, we're all busy. If you're like me, your mind is running in about ten different directions at all times. This does, on occasion, cause us (or at least, me) to do stupid things. You know, like almost forget to rinse the conditioner out of my hair, or go into work without my office pass key. When I was a kid, it was not uncommon for Mom and me to get out of the driveway, and realize that the front door was wide open. I can totally see me at the mailbox, dropping off my Comic-Con program (yep, still in the purse) instead of the gas bill. Honestly, the fact that I haven't done something like that is astounding.

I'm working on my concentration skills, but in the meantime, I'm making myself feel better by realizing that I'm not the only one going through this. Because I'm a kind and wonderful human being (cue laughter), I'm also sharing them with you. Enjoy!

The first on the list is from Mommy Confessions, an alternatingly hysterical and touching parenting blog (no, I still don't have any kids, but I like funny, and this is funny). Rather than copy the entire post, the link will take you to a fantastic story about getting ready for a PTA function, and forgetting one rather important piece of your fashion ensemble. Laugh out loud funny and totally relateable, with or without kids.

A couple of other sites that will make you feel better about your own absentmindedness (or really, just in general) are Lamebook, where it's become obvious that some people should need a license to post on Facebook (think before you write, people, and pay attention!! And I thought my ability to concentrate was off...), and part of the forum absolutewrite, where people actually write in their most embarrassing absentminded mistakes. Some will make you cringe, and some may seem uncomfortably familiar. One thing's for sure, though: we are not alone.

  1. oh, wow. you know my excellent track record with this stuff. the man drove me to the train the other morning, and i was gathering my things. i put my keys in my purse, turned around to fix my hair, then turned back. i proceeded to spend three minutes running around my room yelling, "where are my keys? seriously! where?"

he reached into my purse and pulled them out. "these?"

    yeah. gifted child.
